2-6 July 2007, Belgrade, SerbiaBACKGROUND FON Debate club functions as one of the students’ organizations on Faculty of Organizational Sciences, University of Belgrade, for almost three years by now. During this period of time we have become one of the most active debating organizations in Serbia, involved in several domestic and international debate events, which has directly resulted in numerous successes on the local, and lately on the international scene as well.
Main goals of our debating team are;
• Popularization of debate as a non violent means of communication;
• Development of skills of argumentation, critical thinking, effective communication, independent research, and teamwork,
• Application of these skills into the individuals’ life in school, in the workplace, in political life, and in fulfilling their responsibilities as citizens of democratic societies.
After a successful cooperation of our Debate Club and Professor Alfred C. Snider (University of Vermont), who was a guest of our Faculty last October, the idea of organizing larger not-just-debate event came up. After a couple of months of preparing, we are proud to invite you to a summer course in Belgrade, which main topic is going to be persuasion and how to persuade. Since we wish our projects to be as professional and as serious as possible, this event will be attended by students from the countries of our region that will have a chance to listen to the master class lectures.
AIM OF THE TRAINING COURSE Purpose of this course is to get participants acquainted with the topic of persuasion (attitude, belief, value and/or behavioral changes through communication) and how to use it in business communication, public speeches and everyday life.
OBJECTIVES OF THE TRAINING COURSE • Creating own way through daily problems;
• Discovering one’s own possibilities and new experiences;
• Higher motivation for better progress in all fields of work;
• Making possibilities for self-actualization;
• Possibility of showing creativity in any sphere of interest.
METHODS Group work, discussion, workshops, exercises, essays writing, presentation, evaluation.
WORKING LANGUAGE English
NUMBER OF PARTICIPANTS Number of participants is limited up to 30; a half is reserved for participants from Serbia while the other 15 seats will be equally divided among participants from the countries of region.
PROFILE OF PARTICIPANTS • Students and postgraduates of faculties whose main domains of studies are; management, law, political sciences, social sciences etc;
• Students involved in extracurricular activities such is debating and/or case study;
• Students active in political life or NGO sector;
• Students with respective academic and practical experience in their field of studies;
• Students proficient in English.
OUTLINE OF A DAY’S SCHEDULE 08:00-09:00 breakfast and transportation form hotel to venue
09:00-12:30 lectures and workshops
12:30-14:00 lunch break
14:00-17:00 lectures and workshops
After 17:00 spare time, including organized social events
TRAINER Alfred C. Snider is the Edwin W. Lawrence Professor of Forensics at the University of Vermont. He has degrees from Brown University, Emerson College, and the University of Kansas. He specializes in debate, argumentation, persuasion and rhetorical analysis. He is the Director of the World Debate Institute and the Lawrence Debate Union.
He spent the last thirty-three years promoting debate and critical communication as an alternative to violence and conflict. He has done formal debate training in sixteen countries and has trained debaters from over thirty-five nations.
Dr. Snider has received every major award given to debate educators in the USA.
Dr. Snider had published five books on debating in the last five years and during his career has edited or written over fifty volumes about debating and for debaters. He is the host of the television program Flashpoint that has over three hundred and twenty episodes. He maintains one of the world’s busiest debate websites, Debate Central (
http://debate.uvm.edu), and is the editor of the Global Debate Blog (
http://debate.uvm.edu/debateblog).
